Men's Fashion: Fit, Ties, Shoes and Wardrobe Basics

Good style begins with clothes that fit, shoes that are cared for, and a few reliable combinations you can wear with confidence.

Start with fit

Fit is the foundation of men's fashion. A shirt should let you move without pulling across the chest; shoulder seams should sit near the edge of your shoulders. Trousers should sit securely at the waist and break cleanly over the shoe. For tailoring, check the shoulder and jacket balance first because those are among the harder areas to alter.

When shopping online, measure a garment you already like and compare its measurements with the brand's size chart. If possible, try the same garment in more than one size and move around in it before deciding.

How to tie a tie

For a classic four-in-hand knot, place the wide end on your dominant side, lower than the narrow end. Cross the wide end over the narrow end, bring it behind, cross it across the front again, pass it up through the neck loop, then down through the front loop. Tighten gently and center the knot. The tip should reach around the middle of your belt buckle; adjust the starting length to get there.

A half-Windsor makes a broader, more symmetrical knot. Choose a knot that suits the collar opening and the tie's fabric thickness, then keep the dimple subtle and centered if you like that finish.

Choose shoes for use and care

For a versatile first pair, choose a comfortable leather shoe in a color that works with the clothes you own. Black is formal and straightforward; brown offers more range with navy and earth tones. Prioritize fit, construction and the surfaces you will walk on over a trend.

Build a useful wardrobe

Think in combinations: a few well-fitting shirts, neutral trousers, a jacket that works for your routine, clean casual shoes and one polished pair. Choose colors that coordinate with each other, then add a personal accent through a tie, knitwear or watch. Men's fashion is easier to maintain when every new piece works with several things you already own.
